Spondylolisthesis Overview with Dr. Herzog (Transcript Below)

Spondylolisthesis is a common condition that affects the human spine. It’s actually a slippage of one vertebrae in relation to the bone below.

What Are the Causes?

There are a variety of causes. Some are congenital, some are acquired.

Symptoms

Patients can present with low back pain. They may develop nerve pain down their legs as well. Commonly, patients with spondylolisthes don’t know they have it. But those patients that do have symptoms, generally they’re of a short lived nature.

Sponydlolisthesis Treatment

Patients who have more persistent symptoms benefit from non-operative care such as supervised physical therapy, an exercise program, and occaisonally interventional pain management injections in their back.

Does it Require Surgery?

It is rare to require surgery for spondylolisthes . Patients with spondylolisthes may experience low back pain, buttock pain, or radiating leg pain and they may benefit from surgery in the worst cases. Different operations address the different causes of spondylolisthes and nerve compression. Patients who have spondylolisthes who have moderate to severe persistent chronic symptoms do benefit from surgery. And most studies show that patients who have surgery for chronic bad symptoms are significantly improved compared to their non-operative peers.
